I was reading on Venturebeat about facebook borrowing 100 million to fund a new hardware infrastructure and it got me thinking about how much hardware would be required to keep Google running smoothly. Now we all know that some Google services can have the odd downtime but its normally software related an nothing to do with the hardware setup.
I did some quick research and found that Google currently has over 1 MILLION servers online and is adding another 500 thousand by the end of this year spread across hundreds of data centres. Each location runs a local version of Google Search and integrates with the rest of the network in real time to produce super fast search results.
With the introduction of Google Application Hosting, Video On Demand and all the other high capacity services Google are investing and innovation in I think its only a mater of time before they design a serious alternative to the hard disk as a dedicated Google user with Gmail, Youtube, App hosting and Video downloads needs some hefty disk space which is not only costly but not great for the environment.
